Kumana National Park – A Birdwatcher’s Paradise and Hidden Gem of the East
Tucked away along Sri Lanka’s southeastern coast, Kumana National Park is a tranquil haven for wildlife enthusiasts, especially bird lovers. Often overshadowed by its famous neighbor, Yala, Kumana offers a more serene and intimate safari experience — where nature thrives undisturbed and beauty unfolds at every turn.
Best known for its prolific birdlife, Kumana is home to over 200 species of birds, including migratory flocks that travel thousands of miles to nest here. During the migratory season (April to July), the park comes alive with painted storks, spoonbills, herons, egrets, pelicans, and even the rare black-necked stork.
